What is it? Being a mom! Of course, she notes, it's also the hardest job -- "as you moms know."
She says the best advice she got about raising kids came from her dad: Remember what it's like to be a kid. "Every time I feel like I'm being pulled in 20 different directions and Ryder just wants to play, I just stop everything and kind of take the time to do that," she told TODAY.com's Katie Quinn.
Actress Kate Hudson, pregnant with her second child, talks about the best parenting advice she ever got: 'Remember what it's like to be a kid.'
On TODAY this morning, before flashing her ginormous engagement ring and announcing that she's now engaged, pregnant actress Kate Hudson told Matt Lauer that she's not officially finding out the gender of her baby -- but she thinks it's a girl.
"She's so nuts in here, she's so wild," she said of her apparently active little bean. "It's got the Hawn gene" -- referring to her own free-spirit mom, Goldie Hawn.
Hudson said she's done the "pendulum test" to guess the gender -- you hold a necklace or a pendulum over your belly, and if moves side to side it's a girl; circles means it's a boy. (Actually, Hudson said the opposite of what most sources say -- circle if it's a girl. But hey, it's not like any of this is scientific.)
Before ultrasounds, people had a ton of folk traditions they used to guess the gender of unborn babies. Have you tried any of these?
-If you like to eat the heel of a loaf of bread, it's a boy; if you won't eat the heel, it's a girl.
-If someone asks to see your hands and you show them palms down, it's a boy; palms up, it's a girl.
-If you pick up a mug by the handle, it's a boy; if you pick up the body of the mug, it's a girl.
-If you carry your extra pregnancy weight out front, it's a boy; on your hips and bottom, it's a girl.
-If the hair on your legs grows more quickly than before you were pregnant, it's a boy; more slowly, it's a girl.
-If your feet are colder than they were before pregnancy, it's a boy; the same, it's a girl.
-If the father-to-be is gaining sympathy weight, it's a boy; no extra pounds on dad, it's a girl.
-If you crave meat and cheese, it's a boy; fruit, it's a girl.
-If your nose spreads during pregnancy, it's a boy; if your nose stays the same, it's a girl.
-If you have no desire for orange juice, it's a boy; if you must have O.J. every day, it's a girl.
